I've always had affection for the sweet juicy taste of apples. I just learned about Applesauce cake and I'm sharing what I learned. Applesauce cake is a dessert cake prepared using apple sauce, flour and sugar as primary ingredients. Various spices are typically used, and it tends to be a moist cake. Ok, I'm already drooling. Several additional ingredients may also be used in its preparation, and it is sometimes prepared and served as a coffee cake. The cake dates back to early colonial times in the United States. National Applesauce Cake Day occurs annually on June 6 in the U.S. You can enjoy this sweet treat all year-round.
It's been claimed that it can support the regulation of blood sugar and ease digestive discomfort, so we asked registered nutritionist Jo Lewin to explore the science behind this popular spice. Raisins are a good source of soluble fiber, which aids our digestion and reduces stomach issues. Raisins also contain tartaric acid. Research shows this protein may have anti-inflammatory properties, improve intestinal function, and help regulate the balance of bacteria in your gut. Both are sweet, and both are ingredients within Applesauce Cake. Yummy!
Applesauce cake goes back to the colonial days
Now I never even heard of applesauce cake until today when I saw a post from Chef Roland Gordon about it being applesauce cake day. That was enough to get me interested and the post inspired this blog so I'm picking up the baton to share more. Now applesauce cake and it's preparation goes all the way back to the colonial days in states like Virginia and Maryland in the south and Massachusetts and Pennsylvania in the North. From 1900 to the 1950s according to Wikipedia, recipes for apple sauce cake started to appear and American cookbooks and they became popular, so much so that they name it after it.
Its full of tasty spices
I'm no cook just to be clear and for disclosure but I love to eat and I love sweets so let's just talk about what goes in it. You need applesauce, flour, sugar as a main ingredient then you've got, eggs, butter, margarine or oil, I like olive oil best. Raisins would make it nice and sweet or dates, chopped apples, chopped nuts, particularly wild nuts or pecans. Finally some cocoa powder. The spices would include cinnamon, nutmeg, and some ginger.
Whipped cream and cupcakes
You bake it, top it with some icing or glaze to elevate the taste buds. You can also sprinkle some confectioners sugar or squeeze some whipped cream on top of it. According to my research, applesauce cake can be moist due to the liquid inside. I'm learning that using chunky style applesauce can also result in a cake with less moisture, dryer and different to the palate. You can even bake them and serve than in the form of cupcakes.
Health benefits? The Apples
So what are the health benefits? Many fruits, including apples, are a natural source of antioxidants. Applesauce is full of antioxidants called phytochemicals. Apples are especially rich in the phytochemicals quercetin, catechin, chlorogenic acid and anthocyanin.
